Aim and Objectives
The aim of the laboratory is the study at molecular level of biochemical pathways and processes involve in the development of diseases of medical, veterinary and agronomic interest. The analysis of role of various proteins (enzymes, receptors etc) in various diseases, in order to delineate the molecular mechanism of the cause and development of therapeutic way, based in substances, that can be used in future as medicines in the confrontation of diseases.
Mainly the laboratory will be focused in first phase in the study of anticancer agents and compounds for diabetes type 2, as well as compounds with therapeutic interest in other illnesses relate with metabolism or the dysfunction of particular proteins.
Activities of the Laboratory of Drug Development will be focused in the following areas:
- Study of molecular mechanisms of action of pharmaceutical compounds
- Studies of pharmacokinetics in animals
- Detection of residues of chemical and pharmaceutical substances in animals
- Identification, expression, purification and characterization of proteins with therapeutic interest
- Synthesis, isolation and characterization of substances that present therapeutic action
- Improvement of existing and/or development of new chemical compounds with therapeutic interest
- Laboratorial trials for chemical compounds with in vitro and/or in vivo assays
- Discovery and study of molecular mechanisms causing illnesses in humans and animals
The laboratory of Drug Development could offer services in the following sectors:
- Quantitative and qualitative analysis and isolation of proteins
- Expression and Large scale production of proteins
- Binding studies of substances, peptides and proteins with other proteins.
- Crystallization, structure determination and modelling of proteins
- Enzymatic and cellular activity of compounds
- Pharmacokinetic studies in animals
- Pharmacological and toxicological evaluation of chemical substances
